In his compelling presentation at the Shroud of Turin 2025 International Conference, Larry Stalley explores how the Shroud of Turin serves as the mysterious “Sign of Jonah” mentioned by Jesus Christ in the Gospels.

Through deep theological insight and biblical typology, Stalley explains that the “Sign of Jonah” was not just a metaphor for Christ’s three days in the tomb but a divine image — the Shroud itself, bearing witness to the Resurrection. Just as Jonah was three days in the belly of the fish, Christ was three days in the “heart of the earth.” The image imprinted on the Shroud, Stalley argues, was created “by the finger of God,” not by human hands, serving as a heavenly testimony to the truth of the Gospel.

He connects this miraculous sign to the early Church’s understanding of divine witnesses and the typology of Aaron’s budding rod and the tablets of stone — all created by God’s own hand. The Shroud, therefore, becomes both proof of divine intervention and a symbol of God’s justice and mercy.
