At the Shroud of Turin 2025 International Conference & Symposium, Fred Baltz presented a compelling analysis of the Gospel of John’s account of the empty tomb. In his presentation, What Did Peter and the Beloved Disciple See in the Tomb?, Baltz examines the Greek text of John 20:4-9 and proposes an alternative translation that offers new insights into the burial cloths.

Baltz suggests that the face cloth (Sudarion) was used as a chin band, which had been rolled or folded in the tomb. This cloth, along with the Shroud, was visible to Peter and John upon entering the tomb. Baltz’s interpretation aligns with the details provided in the Gospel, showing how the burial cloths reflect Jewish customs and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The proposal also offers a fresh perspective on the burial process and the significance of the Shroud and Sudarium. Baltz’s study provides a deeper understanding of the events surrounding the Crucifixion, shedding light on the cultural practices of the time and their relationship to the Christian faith.

This presentation challenges viewers to reconsider the role of the burial cloths in the Resurrection story and invites further reflection on the Shroud of Turin’s authenticity.
