If you ever write a historical fiction novel, you will encounter many interesting facts while going through the research process. As you take a topic and watch the history unfold right before your eyes instead of a textbook or a computer screen, you start to recognize the humanity in the text. You learn how people from a particular time dressed, what they ate, how they walked, where they traveled, how the streets or their homes might have smelled. By the end, you have a picture full of senses from a distant time that no longer feels as distant as it once did.

This is why I am beginning my series of ‘Did You Know’ facts, to reveal what is behind the magical curtain of history and differentiate between the facts and the fiction. In the next few months, you will see articles explaining periods, food, clothes and have a chance to add your ideas to the mix. Have you ever wondered what sauce the Romans used to eat with almost everything, what the citizens of Jerusalem drank around 33 AD, or the kinds of coins they used? These are just a few of the facts I have for you, but there will be much more. Are you ready to see the facts behind the fiction?
