If you are familiar with the history and controversy of Jesus’ burial cloth, known as the Shroud of Turin, you will have seen the documentaries, read the history, and looked over the opinions on the Holy Shroud. So, you may be wondering how this book of the Shroud of Turin is different from others? Most stories are about proving the authenticity of the Shroud and proving or debunking theories around the mystery. My book assumes that it is the authentic burial shroud of Jesus Christ and builds a multi-faceted story about its history.
What Are The Other Books About?
Other books about the Shroud of Turin focus on proving or debunking the validity of the cloth. Working with theories of how against all odds the shroud could have survived through time, how the image could have been imprinted onto the fibers of the cloth, and other questions. Some questions focus on the scientific facts of the Shroud, and others have more religious significance.
Scientific and Theological Aspects of the Shroud
The books and articles focusing on a more scientific aspect of the Shroud of Turin shed light on intriguing parts of the mystery behind the cloth and its image. Some speak to aspects of the cloth itself, others the geographic location, and much more. All of which are crucial to unraveling whether this cloth was the witness to the moment of Jesus’ resurrection.
However, what is a book or article that looks at both aspects so we can gain a better understanding of this concept? After much research, I have decided to use an article titled “Why Shroud of Turin’s Secrets Continue to Elude Science,” written by Frank Viviano of National Geographic. For its ability to transport the reader into the world of the Shroud of Turin but you may be wondering how this article does that if it is non-fiction? The article begins with a striking image of two nuns holding a long cloth taken by a photographer named Marco Ansaloni– which immediately draws you in. The photo is taken of the nuns carefully moving the cloth as one of the nun’s hands can be seen blurred and ever so slightly doubled. The caption states that the figures in the picture are, in fact, two modern-day nuns from a convent in Turin, Italy, who are unrolling a copy of the Shroud that was made in 1644. The article delves into the debate of the “53-square-foot rectangle of linen known as the Shroud of Turin” between scientists and theologists across the globe.
Viviano states that the “scientific inquiry into the shroud began in 1898, with the startling image captured by Italian amateur photographer Secondo Pia.” This lead to the scientific community’s motivation to come together to examine the artifact. “Ranks of physicists and chemists have weighed in on the fabric’s age and the image’s composition. Forensic pathologists, microbiologists, and botanists have analyzed its bloodstains, along with specks of dirt and pollen on its surface. Statisticians have combed through mountains of data.” However, despite this, Viviano states that the “sum result is a standoff,” –in which the reader can infer– is between those not only in the scientific community but also (at times) in the theological community.
Viviano’s article depicts the Shroud controversy of whether it’s real or whether it’s fake, why it is essential to today’s world, and how we as people can take it as it is. Articles like these are why books like mine are so crucial to literature about the holy artifact as history and even fictional accounts surrounding the controversy. As this article explains the background, the research, and the controversy, while my book takes these concepts and create a historical but also fictional story.
What Is My Book About?
My book is about the history of the Shroud from that fateful day on Golgotha in Jerusalem through the centuries to it modern day location in Turin, Italy. There are many evidence-based theories as to what may have happened to it. This book is a historical fiction of a possible history of the Shroud as it traveled from Jerusalem to Edessa, Constantinople, Athens, France, and Turin. More importantly this book helps the reader learn more about the Shroud in an easy-to-read format. I hope you’ll find it as interesting as I did while researching the story and the history of the different epochs to bring this story to life.
Conclusion
My book is focused on a plausible history of the Shroud of Turin, taking into account both science and theology to create a historical but fictional story to keep the mystery alive. It is as entertaining as it is informative and is backed by hours of research and years of intrigue. It will take you through the history of the Holy Shroud, introducing you to the people involved in the cloth and creating characters to aid in the gaps of time. Have you ever wondered who could make the cloth or retrieve it or what the city looked like during the time? My book answers these questions and more; I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.
