At The Shroud of Turin 2025 International Conference & Symposium, Fr. Andrew Dalton delivered a deeply moving tribute to the late Barrie Schwortz, the Jewish photographer whose pioneering documentation of the Shroud of Turin has influenced generations of researchers and believers alike.

Fr. Dalton shared personal memories of Schwortz—his humor, warmth, and commitment to scientific integrity. As a member of the 1978 STURP team, Barrie captured the most iconic images of the Shroud ever produced. Later, he founded Shroud.com, which became the world’s most trusted digital archive for Shroud research and education.

What made Barrie unique, Fr. Dalton reflected, was not only his expertise but his sincerity. Though not a Christian, Barrie’s dedication to uncovering truth about the Shroud transcended religion. He often said, “God works in mysterious ways,” acknowledging how his work led him toward a rediscovery of faith and meaning.

Fr. Dalton reminded the audience that Barrie’s legacy extends beyond photography—it is one of unity, dialogue, and integrity. His example continues to inspire scholars and seekers worldwide to approach the mystery of the Shroud with both reason and reverence, as a witness to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
