At The Shroud of Turin 2025 International Conference & Symposium, Fr. Andrew Dalton—assistant professor of theology and expert in Shroud studies—delivered a powerful presentation titled “The Shroud of Jesus in the Gospel of John.” Joined by artist Michaela Barta, whose interpretive dance “Recognition” captures Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Christ, Fr. Dalton led attendees on a journey through scripture, science, and faith.

Drawing from the Gospel of John, Fr. Dalton explored how the Shroud of Turin embodies the mystery of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. He examined the details of the linen cloths found in the empty tomb, connecting them to the physical and spiritual realities described in the Gospel. His reflections showed that the Shroud’s image—impossible to replicate by human means—points toward something extraordinary: a moment where faith and reason converge.

Michaela Barta’s performance deepened the reflection, transforming theology into living art. Her movements mirrored the longing, awe, and ultimate recognition of Christ’s victory over death, as experienced by Mary Magdalene in the garden.

This collaboration between theological insight and artistic expression offers a profound reminder that the Shroud of Turin continues to bear silent witness to the Resurrection—inviting all to believe, reflect, and be renewed.
