At The Shroud of Turin 2025 International Conference & Symposium, Prof. Alessandro Malantrucco shared a visionary project that bridges theology, science, and education. His talk, “Complexity and Transdisciplinarity: An App to Manage Shroud Data,” presented a groundbreaking initiative — a web-based platform designed to organize and analyze global Shroud research.
Rooted in his expertise in spiritual theology, Prof. Malantrucco emphasized the importance of a complex epistemological model inspired by Pope Francis’ call for unity between disciplines. This approach values collaboration over division, promoting a holistic understanding of the Shroud of Turin as both a scientific artifact and a spiritual symbol.
The app, developed in partnership with students at Italy’s Liceo Scientifico Statale Vito Volterra, classifies Shroud data into four categories: unquestionable observations, confirmed findings, debated evidence, and biblical correlations. The tool allows researchers and the public to explore data interactively and link to verified studies.
This project not only preserves decades of research but also encourages a culture of cooperation in Shroud studies — bridging faith, reason, and technology.
